For many years, I have devoted my law practice exclusively to New Jersey divorce and family law matters.
Hardly a single day goes by that I do not see an inquiry from someone that looks something like this: “My spouse and I want to get divorced. I don’t have the money to hire a divorce lawyer. What can I do?”
One obvious answer is to try to get divorced without using a lawyer. Just go to the Courthouse in the New Jersey county where you live, get the necessary paperwork, fill it out and do all of the other things according to the directions, and in a few months you’ll be divorced.
Hey, you’ll save money (that you say that you don’t have). What’s the problem?
Well, there may be a lot of problems, even if you think that you and your spouse can agree on everything.
Why? Because most people don’t know all of the things that must be agreed upon. Leaving any of them out can lead to a lot of problems later. Problems which can profoundly affect you and your children, and will cost a lot more money to try to resolve than if you had just addressed them when you got divorced.
I always put myself in the position of each person who I talk to, and the last thing that I would want to do if I were that person is to spend money unnecessarily. I only want to have clients who can actually benefit by the services that my firm provides.
The sensible solution? Call me. I am happy to speak with you personally for a few moments, to get a basic sense of your situation. And there’s no charge.

Many times, I will say that handling it yourself sounds like a viable option.
If not, and it sounds like you might be able to benefit by my firm’s services, I will suggest that you schedule a face-to-face meeting (called an Assessment), in which I will give you as much time as it takes to go over your situation in detail, give you educated answers to your questions, and expert guidance as to what I think is the best course of action.
